Im seventeen and l think we have medical mutual, my mom is touchy about me asking for contacts so im thinking about just making the appointment for myself. is there some way l can figure out if my insurance will cover contacts without like calling and asking them?

The first thing you need to realize is , you do not have insurance, your
mom does. You also need to realize that if she does not want you to get them ..you do not get them. There must be a reason she does not want you to get contacts. Most insurance plans still require a hefty
co-pay when buying contacts. If by some miracle you managed to get them without her consent l would hope she works your but off to pay for them on your own.

Many insurance companies do not cover contact lenses at all. Mine doesn't. They only partially cover glasses. Have you asked your mom if they're covered? If not, why not offer to pay for all costs not covered by insurance?

Show her you're serious by getting a part-time job and saving the money in a savings account.

You can either read ur policy, or talk to ur company or agent.

However, this is not YOUR policy, it is ur mother is policy - so SHE would have to do the asking. You might be COVERED under her policy, but it is still her policy.

Health insurance does not cover vision stuff. So ur contacts r not going to be covered. She MIGHT have vision coverage, but it is a seperate plan. How it works, is they pay for the exam, & usually a set amount towards the contacts - like $100. Then u pay for the rest.

First, u need to find out whether u have vision coverage on ur policy.

Vision services (routine eye exams, glasses, & contacts) r not covered under a health insurance policy. You need to have a vision rider on ur policy.

That being said. l can tell u how to find out. (Coincidentally, l used to work for Medical Mutual. :) )

You can look up ur benefits online by registering for ''My Health Plan'' on the Medical Mutual website. (Dependents r allowed to register on the website to access their own information - u will need ur full first name, ID Number, Group Number & Date of Birth.) Otherwise, u should call Customer Service to find out if u have coverage for vision services on ur policy. The Member Services number is on the back of the insurance card. (There is more than one Member Services number, because some employer groups have special phone numbers with Medical Mutual. If u do not have access to ur insurance card, call the general number at 800-523-8558.) Customer service phone lines r open from 7 am to 6 pm, Ohio time.

And u *can* call Customer Service directly.it does not have to be ur mom who makes the call. Medical Mutual will take a phone call from a dependent on a policy, asking about their own claims or benefits. (You do have to provide identifying information, of course.generally stuff like the policy number, ur name, & date of birth.)

One thing l will tell you.if u do happen to have vision coverage through MMO, keep in mind that when contacts r covered its generally in place of glasses (frames/lenses). If u have had a recent claim for glasses OR plan to purchase a new pair of glasses in the near future, that is something important to keep in mind. Unless ur mom is employer has purchased special coverage above & beyond a standard vision policy, u generally can only get either glasses or contacts within ur plan coverage period..not both.
